A Review of 45 Cases of Intussusception

Abstract
This report of 45 cases includes the surgical observation and experiences of acute intussusception treated in Soo Do Medical College Hospital from July, 1959 to June, 1963.
1) In age distribution, 19 cases(42 % )were observed under the one year of age, and the peak incidence occurs from the 6th to 12th month. Sixty four per cent of the patients are under the age of 15, and male showed decidedly higher incidence than female with ratio of 2 to 1.
2) Among 163 cases of intestinal obstruction seen at this department during the period, 27. 6 (45 eases) are due to acute intussuseeption.
3) Of 45 cases of acute intussusception, only 3 cases were the causes identified, namely, Meekel¢¥s
diverticulum, congenital ileo-cecal band, and malignant lymphoma of cecum.
4) The cardinal symptoms- and signs were colicky abdominal pain in 90%, vomiting in 85%,
bloody stool in 50% and a palpable abdominal mass in 75%.

6) Of 45 cases treated, operative intervention was resorted in 40 cases, in which 3 were treated
7.5% with manual reduction, . 3 with primary resection and anastomosis and 3 with right hemicolectomy. Rest of the cases (5) was successfully corrected with barium enema(hydrostatic pressure reduction).
7) Our surgical mortality in 40 cases of intussusception was 9%.
